A Wooden Fence Dilemma: To Paint or to Stain?

A Wooden Fence Dilemma: To Paint or to Stain?

If you’re one of those people who are unsure whether to paint or stain your wooden fence, you’ve come to the right place. This article will explain the benefits of staining and painting a fence and the edge one has over the other.

Both procedures protect your wooden fence from pest infestation, rot and damage from harsh climate. Of the two, however, experts often advise to stain your wooden fence because of the advantages it offers over paint.

Wood Stain Gets Absorbed Better
Since wood stain seeps deeper into the grain, it can protect the wood better. Paint on the other hand is more attached to the surface and can easily chip and flake over time. Stains just fade and don’t react the same way as paint. In addition, not all species of wood work well with paint. Cedar wood cannot breath when painted and therefore doesn’t last very long because of it.

  • You don’t have to sacrifice color when staining. wood stain comes in a variety of lively colors like yellow, purple, green, blue and red. You can also use a transparent stain to highlight the beauty of the wood.
  • Wood stain is more affordable than you think. a gallon of paint costs more than a gallon of stain. Although you need more stain by the volume compared to paint, stain doesn’t have to be renewed often. Paint, on the other hand, needs to be reapplied

Once in a while. The paint on a wooden fence also needs more time to be renewed since you need to scrape and sand away old paint before you put on a new coat. Re-staining only requires that you clean your fence from filth and directly put on a new layer of stain, making the whole job a lot easier and faster to do.
