An Introduction to the Different Types of Fences

Fences are a lot like people: not all of them serve the same purpose nor do all of them look alike. Some fences are for privacy and security; others are for keeping horses and other livestock while others still are simply used for decorative purposes. choosing the right fence can be really confusing especially with the number of options to choose from. To orient you well, here is a list of the different types of fences and their respective purposes:

Aluminum and Metal Fence
Aluminum is a great substitute to wrought iron and requires little maintenance. Because of its flexibility, it can be used as a pool fence and as a decorative fence around your home. It comes in different sizes and shades so you don’t have to worry about matching it to the motif of your home.

On the other hand, wrought iron is also very durable but is generally heavier and more expensive. Steel fences come in a powder coat finish and can be epoxy finished to make them more durable.

Vinyl Fences
Vinyl fences are made of pvc and do not split, warp or rot like wooden ones. They can be used for privacy, picket fencing and decorative fencing. Compared to other types, it is more affordable. Repainting is also unnecessary when maintaining vinyl fences.

Chain Link Fences
As the most common type of fencing installed in North America, chain link fences are sought for their strength, low-maintenance requirement and inexpensiveness. It is the ideal fence to use when you want security against tresspassers and wild animals.

Wooden Fences
Wooden fences are a classic. They are attractive and elegant but are prone to destruction from the onslaught of harsh elements. The most common types of wood used include spruce, redwood, pine, cedar and fir. Besides being used decoratively, it can also be used for installing dog runs.
