A Guide For First Time Fencers

A Guide For First Time Fencers

The security and comfort you get from a well-built fence around your home can never be stressed enough. For people who have yet to have a fence installed, the process might be daunting with all the materials and effort involved.

To ease the stress, here are five tips in making your fencing choice easier:

Decide on What You Want
Is your priority keeping intruders and wild animals at bay? Or is it increasing your property’s value? Either way, as the homeowner, you have to consider that fences come in different patterns and sizes depending on the purpose. Think of what you need—a durable, high metal fence or a dainty low picket fence—before heading to the hardware store.

Know Your Codes
Neighborhood associations and local building codes may dictate specifications as to the height, the distance in between pickets and the distance from the lowest point of the picket to the ground among others. Building permits can become necessary in some cities. Inquire how far a fence needs to be set from sidewalks and property lines.

Be Meticulous on the Materials
Besides the purpose, what you have to take into consideration is the climate of your area. In warmer climates, wood is easily damaged by water. In colder climates, concrete anchors are necessary and posts need to be planted 36 inches deep to avoid them from snapping due to freezing temperatures.

Think About the Openings
Create at least two wide gates to allow the entrance of wheelbarrows and gardening equipment into your yard. If you want to have better access to a nearby park or a neighboring house, don’t be afraid to add more gates. A removable panel is also a good asset as this can let in heavy equipment into your yard for future projects.

Turn to the Professionals
Installing a fence is harder than it looks. With every decision you are unsure of, do not hesitate to consult with professionals to avoid damaging you materials before they even get installed.
