How To Bring Back The Shine On Your Wrought Iron Fence

How To Bring Back The Shine On Your Wrought Iron Fence

The beauty of a wrought iron fence comes from its unique texture, which is a product of the extreme heat and force that goes into rendering iron into a usable form. Despite being more durable than a wooden fence, it still needs a bit of maintenance work in order to make its regal appeal last. Below are steps in keeping wrought iron fences clean:

  1. Clean you wrought iron fence from rust with a wire bush. Make sure to scrub nooks and crannies. Next, remove any filth with a soft cloth soaked in a solution of warm water and detergent. Allow it to dry.
  2. Remove any remaining rust particles with the use of a commercial rust neutralizer. Follow the instructions written on the packaging to figure out the exact amount and procedure in applying the product. If you choose not to use synthetic chemicals, use a solution made of half white vinegar and half lemon juice and allow it to dry on the fence for one hour. Wash it off with soapy water.
  3. To protect windows, pathways and plants from primer and paint splatters, cover them with a cloth or tarp. (when covering plants, lightly spray water on them before covering.)
  4. Once it dries completely, put on one coat of a primer particularly meant for wrought iron. Let it set for at least four hours.

5.) The final step is to cover the primed fence in rust-resistant enamel paint. Use a paintbrush with medium-sized bristles so you can apply the paint in smooth, even strokes in all areas. You can also get hold of aerosol paint for the job to become easier. Just remember to hold the can three to four inches away from the fence. For best results, apply two coats and set some time for the paint to dry in between coats.
