How To Properly Repaint A Wooden Fence

Painting a wooden fence is not everyone's favorite chore. If you don't plan properly for the job, it can be time-consuming and back-breaking work and can be really frustrating. The fact is, there's no shortcut for getting your painted wood fence to look as good as possible. You have to go through the whole nine yards to really see and appreciate the difference of a properly painted wooden fence. But, it's worth a little extra effort to get it right!

1. Do Some Prepping

Some people repaint their fences the second they get a hold of a bucket full of paint and a paintbrush. Before you start doing the actual work, consider getting a large cardboard to cover the grass underneath the fence to avoid stains. Washing the fence and scrubbing it down from dirt, flaking paint and cobwebs is also great to make sure that everything's clean when you start. This is also a way for you to inspect whether any of the pickets have been infested by termites or other pests. If any of them are, replace them with new ones.

2. Acquire the Materials

Once your fence is dry, purchase a good quality primer, outdoor paint and paintbrush. Low-quality paint does not last very long and the bristles of a cheap brush can easily fall off.

3. Start Painting

Always put the primer on first. It protects the wood and makes the surface easier for the paint to adhere to. After it dries, proceed with using the outdoor paint. It is best to work on five boards at a time---painting one side and painting the other side right after---to achieve the perfect finish.

4. Let it Dry

The proper time to repaint a wooden fence is when there is little sunlight. Rays that are too harsh can dry out paint too quickly thereby making it lose its ability to protect the wood. Once you're done repainting, leave your fence to set and witness its rebirth before your eyes.
